Risk and Causes of tooth decay

Generally, there is always a risk of tooth decay, but there are certain factors that speed up the process.

  • Tooth Location: The higher risk of tooth decay is in your Molars and Premolars. As they are located at the back the food particles might tend to get stuck which causes the risk of decay.
  • Plaque:  This is caused because of the excessive build-up of sugars and starch on your teeth which will lead to tooth decay in the long run.
  • Improper Brushing: If you don’t brush your teeth regularly it will lead to the formation of plaque on your tooth which can cause the risk of tooth decay.
  • Dental Neglect: If you see the starting symptoms of tooth decay and do not take any necessary steps it may lead to poor oral hygiene and may cause decay.
  • Consumption of smokeless tobacco: It has a very higher risk of tooth decay as well as mouth cancer if not taken seriously.
  • Dry Mouth:  If no sufficient saliva is produced in the mouth then the risk occurs. It may be caused because of the medication used. So oral hygiene is very important.
  • Age Factor: Children are at higher risk of decay because of their sensitive gums and high intake of sugars. Old age may also cause the risk because of the medications.
  • Worn out Fillings:  If the  cavity is filled before and not taken care of properly then the fillings may cause the decay.
