Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention
Topping the list of the most irritating nonharmful injuries, canker sores are going to be our topic of talk for today. They are painful patches or sores that come up inside our mouths. They are usually triggered by minor injuries that are caused to the inside of your mouth, vegetables and fruits that are acidic, and spicy hot foods.
About Canker Sores
Shallow ulcers that usually occur at the top inner lining of your mouth are known as canker sores and their medical term is “aphthous ulcers”. They go from white to yellow while having a red lining around them. They are quite small in their size but give you a lot of pain anytime you will eat something and even while you are talking.
They are of two types:
- Simple canker sores: These are the constantly showing sores that are common to occur three to four times a year. People between the age of 10 to 20 suffer from these types of canker sores the most.
- Complex canker sores: These are not the occasionally occurring sores and usually occur in the mouth of people who have had them in the past.
Causes of Canker Sores
They are of the mysteries of the human body that the scientists and doctors have not yet unveiled and hence, the cause of the occurrence of canker sores in the human mouth remains a mystery.
The simple sores show up in the inside of the mouths of people who have either suffered a minor injury inside their mouth, ate something too acidic, or maybe have some sharp dental appliance in their mouth.
The complex canker sores are caused due to underlying diseases which are affecting the body’s immune system, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and AIDS. Nutritional problems or deficiencies can also trigger complex canker sores.
Symptoms
The common symptoms are:
- Painful patches inside your mouth, including your tongue, the back portion of the roof of your mouth, or the inside of your cheeks.
- Burning or tingling sensations before the appearance of sores in your mouth.
- The appearance of round, white or gray-colored sores with a red lining around their border.
Treatment
They do not require specific treatment as they heal themselves someday by giving you some pain. A week or two is the maximum time that a normal sore takes to heal.
If you are having large, painful, or not healing sores, then you can treat them with the use of any over-the-counter antibacterial mouth rinse, this will reduce the pain in your mouth as well as make sure that it gets healed as soon as possible.
Prevention
Since the main cause of sores is in itself unknown, you do not have a specific thing to prevent to make sure that they do not appear in your mouth. But the normal precautions that you can take is to avoid spicy food items, acidic fruits and vegetables, and anything that might irritate the insides of your mouth.
