Everyone knows about the short term anxiety and the terrifying thoughts that anyone gets before a surgical procedure, that is going to include or be based on them. These neurological responses towards the action we are about to take are very natural and can be seen in everyone, once in a while. This is where the procedure of sedation dentistry comes in to play its part. Sedation dentistry is a procedure in which the body of a patient that is suffering from anxiety for a certain period is introduced to a class of drugs that are termed sedatives.
These sedatives show their work in the body by suppressing the neurological areas of the CNS (Central Nervous System) that are associated with the conscious awareness of that body. There are many types and many classes of such sedatives that consist of different molecular formations as well as different making procedures. This is the reason due to which different sedatives are prescribed to every different individual, according to the condition that they are going through. No matter which kind or type of sedative that one is prescribed to use, the key sensation that he/she would feel would be of relaxation unless a sedative of very high concentration is given to the patient as it would enable him/her to continue to exhibit any signs of consciousness.
Types of sedation
The procedure of sedation dentistry needs the dentist (who is introducing the sedative) to consist of various knowledge about the symptoms and the effect that the sedative would have on the patient. Due to this, sedation dentistry is always performed by a professional and experienced dentist as a slight miscalculation can put the patient in a coma, if not, can even prove to be fatal. To make this procedure convenient, the sedations have been grouped in three different categories, according to the effects that they have on the body of the patient. These three categories are as follows:
- General sedation: These sedatives provide their user with mild relaxing sensations and hence, improve and elevate their mental state. These are mostly used in the cases of people that suffer from mild anxiety or constant panic triggers. There doesn’t have many side effects but it has been shown in the studies that there have been many patients who were facing mild trauma and problems in body functionality due to the constant use of these sedatives.
- Moderate sedation: These sedatives are only given by prescription and are also termed fatal drugs and for good enough reasons. These drugs are for the patients that are going to undergo a certain basic level of surgery and is mainly introduced in a body through the means of injecting. These have many side effects and provide a noticeable level of relaxation.
- Deep sedation: These are the sedatives that can cause a body to stop feeling any activity that happens in it or on it. These are termed as hazardous. These are for extreme purposes only.
