Local Anaesthesia is given to numb the pain and make the patient feel relax during the surgical procedures. When you undergo a surgical procedure, the doctor gives you a sedative known Anaesthesia. Surgical procedures are quite painful and sometimes a bit intense. The body could not go through all the pain during the process.

BENEFITS OF LOCAL ANAESTHESIA OVER GENERAL ANAESTHESIA:

Local Anaesthesia: 

  • It numbs one small area of the body. You stay awake and alert.  
  • The type of anaesthesia or sedation you get depends on many factors. They include the procedure you are having and your current health. 
  • Local anaesthesia is for simpler procedures like a cavity filling, which requires a shorter time to complete and is generally less complexity.   • These are equally effective through an injection or local application. Local anaesthesia does not cause any damage to the tissue and are free from producing allergic reactions. 
  • Most of the dental problems uses local anaesthesia, as it’s for a shorter period of time. 
  • The tooth gets numb for 2-3 hours, while the lips and tongue will get numb approximately  for 3 to 5 hours.
  • There may be some tingling pain after the procedure. The doctor may give instructions not to eat anything a few hours before surgery. It is also important not to drink any alcohol for 24hours before receiving the anaesthetic. 

General Anaesthesia:

  • General Anaesthesia is the combination of drugs that put you to sleep. When a patient takes general anaesthesia, the patient cannot feel any sensation as it puts him to sleep. It is also called as medically induced coma rather than sleep.
  • Therefore, General anaesthesia in dentistry is not frequently advisable. Because, it has more risks involved than local anaesthesia.
  • The patient may not feel the complete surgical process but symptoms like nausea, headache, shivering, sweating and even hallucinations might also occur in some cases.
  • Propofol is one of the most commonly used intravenous drugs employed to induce and maintain general anaesthesia. Sometimes it may also cause high and low blood pressure problems. 
  • For some patients, because of their age or special needs, they are unable to undergo routine dental care such as extractions or fillings in the usual way and they may need to have a general anaesthetic to receive their dental care.
  • After the procedure, they will be medications that reverse anaesthesia and waking you up. It may take some time to fully recover from the nausea which goes away later.

Most of the dentists prefer local anaesthesia over general anaesthesia as it involves low to no risk at all.
